Stanley, Durham

Stanley is a former mining town in County Durham. Stanley was first mentioned in 1211, though it grew to be a sizeable town with the development of the mining industry. More than 160 people were killed in the West Stanley Pit Disaster of 1909, one of the worst coal mining disasters in British history. The town is within the council area of County Durham.
