Stamford Hill, Middlesex

Stamford Hill is a former hamlet that is now an urban area in the north of the metropolitan district of Hackney, Middlesex. The hamlet developed on the eponymous hill around the Roman road Ermine Street (also known as Stamford Hill here) following its turnpiking in 1713. The arrival of trams and trains in 1872 set off a 20-year building programme that established the present layout of Stamford Hill. The area is home to the largest community of Hasidic Jews in Europe. It is within the council area of Hackney.
