Stalybridge is a town in the foothills of the Pennines, straddling the River Tame, which here forms the boundary between Cheshire and Lancashire. The town, like the bridge from which it takes its name, straddles the river and, hence, the county border. With the construction of a cotton mill in 1776, Stalybridge became one of the first centres of textile manufacture during the Industrial Revolution. The town is within the council area of Tameside.
