Staines, Middlesex
Staines (or Staines-upon-Thames) is a historic market town in the Spelthorne area of Middlesex, on the River Thames. Staines appears in Domesday as Stanes. The first bridge across the Thames at Staines is thought to have been built by the Romans. The current Staines Bridge, designed by George Rennie, was opened in 1832 by William IV. The first surviving record of a market is from 1218. The town became a major centre for linoleum manufacture from 1864. The town is within the council areas of Spelthorne district and Surrey county council.
