St Patrick's Well, Westmorland

St Patrick's Well is a holy well in Westmorland. As with many holy wells it has a reputation of curing sickness and is where St Patrick is supposed to have baptized converts to Chritianity and caused a church to be built. It is said that after his short stay in Patterdale the district became known as 'Patrickdale'. It has also been said that the present well was not on the original spot, having been constructed in the 18th century to satisfy the idle curiosity of visitors. The well still gives a constant supply of fresh water and is protected by a small roofed stone chamber. It is within the council area of Westmorland and Furness.
