St Leonards-on-Sea, Sussex

St Leonards-on-Sea (often just St Leonards) is a town and seaside resort in Sussex. St Leonards was developed as a new town by James Burton from 1826, work later continued by his son Decimus. The resort was named from the ancient parish of St Leonard and its church, demolished in the 15th century. St Leonards was incorporated as a town by an Act of Parliament in 1832 and became a fashionable seaside destination. The expansion of Hastings seafront to the east of St Leonards saw the two become contiguous by the late 19th century. St Leonard's Church (1961) replaced that designed by James Burton, destroyed by a V-1 flying bomb in 1944. Marine Court (1938) is a Streamline Moderne apartment block on the seafront, modelled on the ocean liner Queen Mary. The town is within the council area of Hastings (East Sussex).
