St John's Priory, Sussex

St John's Priory is a former ecclesiastical preceptory and later farmhouse near Poling, Sussex. A Preceptory or Commandery of the Knights Hospitallers of St John of Jerusalem was founded here in the 12th century. In 1541 it was suppressed. The surviving buildings consist of the 13th-century chapel adapted into a dwelling in the 16th century and altered about 1830. It is built of stone rubble, flints and red brick with some timber-framing exposed at the back. The buildings were known as Fairplace Farm until the late 20th century. The monument is within the council area of Arun (West Sussex).
