St George in the East, Middlesex

St George in the East is a metropolitan district and ancient parish in the south-east of Middlesex. Part of the East End of London, it lies north of Wapping, with St Katherine's to its west and Shadwell to its east. The church of St George in the East, designed by Nicholas Hawksmoor, was built from 1714-1729, the former hamlet of Wapping-Stepney then becoming the parish of St George in the East. The parish saw large-scale urban development from the late 18th century. It is within the council area of Tower hamlets.
