St Cloud's Well, Northamptonshire

St Cloud's Well is a natural spring and holy well in Longthorpe, Northamptonshire, in the Soke of Peterborough area of the county. The well lies within Thorpe Park, the former estate of Thorpe Hall. The spring bubbles up through limestone rock and around it have been built three chambers of undressed stone. The whole of which is enclosed in an artificial mound on which trees and shrubs have encroached. Contiguous to the basin are some small fish ponds. Much of the site’s folklore and history derives from a story entitled The Knight of the Red Cross, a story based in Richard I’s reign. Some have suggested there is a tunnel from the well which runs to the Abbey at Peterborough, although there is no evidence of this. The well is within the council area of Peterborough.
