Spitalfields, Middlesex
Spitalfields is a metropolitan district in the East End of London, in south-east Middlesex. The hospital and priory of St Mary Spital was established in 1197 (dissolved in 1539). Spitalfields Market was founded in 1638. The area saw urban development from the late 17th century around the silk-weaving industry, becoming a place of refuge for the Huguenots. It later became a centre of Jewish and, from the 1960s, Bangladeshi immigration. The 225-foot spire of Christ Church (1729) remains the area’s landmark. The area is within the council area of Tower Hamlets.
