Spital Gate, Gloucestershire

Spital Gate is the 12th-century gatehouse to the former Augustinian Abbey of St Mary, Cirencester, Gloucestershire. Originally built in 1180, on the south bank of the River Churn, the single-storey gatehouse with its attic, was the abbey's main entrance. The abbey grounds is now a public park. The gate along with parts of the precinct wall are the only remains of the abbey above ground. A large country house, Abbey House, was built on the abbey site but eventually demolished in 1964. The site is within the council area of Cotswold (Gloucestershire).
