Spike Island, Somerset

Spike Island is an urban area in central Bristol, lying between the Floating Harbour and the New Cut of the Avon, in Somerset. Spike Island was created by William Jessop in the early 19th century, when he constructed the New Cut. Once the site of working quays, shipyards and warehousing, it now forms an area of dock-side housing, cultural venues and museums including Brunel's SS Great Britain. Spike Island is within the council area of Bristol.
