Speke, Lancashire

Speke is a former village that is now a suburb of Liverpool, Lancashire. Speke remained a small village until the 1930s. Liverpool Corporation bought the Speke estate in 1928, the area became part of the county borough of Liverpool in 1932 and a major housing development followed. Speke Airport (now Liverpool John Lennon Airport) was constructed between 1930-1933. Speke Hall is a wood-framed wattle-and-daub Tudor manor house owned by the National Trust. Speke is within the council area of Liverpool.
