Southsea is a seaside resort and an urban area in Portsmouth, lying at the southern end of Portsea Island, Hampshire. Southsea developed from the early 19th century to provide housing for workers at the Portsmouth dockyard. Initially known as Croxton Town, after the land owner, it was later renamed Southsea after nearby Southsea Castle. Alongside its suburban growth, it also became a major leisure and bathing destination. The area was incorporated into the municipal area of Portsmouth in 1904. It remains a mixed residential and leisure destination. The actor Peter Sellers was born in Southsea in 1925. Southsea is within the council area of Portsmouth.
