Southport, Lancashire

Southport is a seaside resort town in Lancashire. Southport was founded in 1792 when William Sutton built a bathing house amongst dunes at South Hawse, later replacing this with the South Port Hotel. The area became popular due to the easy access from the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. Southport grew to become a major resort in the 19th century. Southport Pier, the second longest in Britain, opened in 1860. The town is notable for its Victorian architecture and its extensive tree planting. Southport remains one of the UK's most popular resorts. The town is within the council area of Sefton.
