Southgate, Middlesex

Southgate is a suburban town in Middlesex. Southgate grew up as a hamlet by the southern entrance to Enfield Chase - the gate stood near the present tube station. Another hamlet grew up to the south, around The Green. The two settlements had merged by the early 19th century. The area remained primarily rural until the opening of Southgate tube station in 1933 after which it rapidly developed into a suburban town. The station, in the Art Deco/Streamline Moderne style, is one of Charles Hodden's best known stations. From 1894-1965, for local government purposes, Southgate formed the basis of the Southgate urban district (municipal borough from 1933). The town is within the council area of Enfield.
