Southampton, Hampshire

Southampton is a city in Hampshire. The city stands at the northernmost point of Southampton Water at the meeting of the River Test and River Itchen. Southampton Water provides a deep, broad, sheltered roadstead, which has ensured Southampton's foremost place among the Channel ports. Southampton's origins lie in the Anglo-Saxon settlement of Hamwic, in what is now the St Mary's area of the city. Following the Conquest, Southampton became the major port of transit between the then capital of England, Winchester, and Normandy. Southampton Castle was built in the 12th century. Southampton is noted for its association with the Titanic, the Spitfire and more recently a number of the largest cruise ships in the world. The city is within the council area of Southampton.
