South Ockendon is a small town in the south of Essex. South Ockendon, which dates from the Saxon era, remained a small village centred around a crossroads until the mid 20th century. The Norman church of St Nicholas of Myra (C of E) stands on the south side of the village green. The Royal Oak tavern dates from the 14th century. Large-scale post-war housing development has seen the village grow into a small town. The town is within the council area of Thurrock.
