South Norwood forms the southern part of the larger suburb of Norwood in Surrey. The wider area was once occupied by an oak forest known as the Great North Wood, "Norwood" being a contraction of "North Wood". Development in the area followed the opening of the Jolly-sailor station in 1839, renamed 'Norwood' in 1846. William Ford Stanley constructed a factory in the area in 1867 and established a technical school in 1902 (now the Stanley Arts). Holy Innocents Church was built in 1895. The area is within the council area of Croydon.
