South Kensington, Middlesex

South Kensington is an urban area which lies in the south of Kensington, Middlesex. The name refers to the area to the south of Kensington Gardens that was developed following the 1851 Great Exhibition in Hyde Park. Within the area are the Royal Albert Hall, the Science Museum, the National History Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Royal College of Music and Imperial College London. The area encompasses several pre-existing settlements including Brompton and Kensington Gore, the name 'South Kensington' gaining usage after the opening of the South Kensington tube station in 1868. The northern part of the area (including the Royal Albert Hall) lies in Westminster. The area is within the council areas of Kensington and Chelsea and Westminster.
