South Hams, Devon

The South Hams is an ancient region of Devon. The area comprises the fertile, sheltered plateau between the southern slopes of Dartmoor and the English Channel, stretching west to east from Plymouth Sound to Tor Bay. It is known as the "Garden of Devon". Principal towns include Kingsbridge, Totnes, Dartmouth and Salcombe. The term "Hams" (from the Old English hamme, meaning sheltered or enclosed land) referred to the productive, sheltered farmlands on either side of Dartmoor. The North Hams is the analogous territory situated between the northern slopes of Dartmoor and the Bristol Channel coast, though this name is now far less used than is South Hams.
