Somerset, Londonderry

Somerset is a suburban area, lying on the west bank of the River Bann in Coleraine, County Londonderry. It is within the townland of Somerset, in the civil parish of Mascosquin. The area was formerly the Somerset Demesne, an estate which dates back to the Plantation, when it became the property of the Merchant Taylors' Company. Somerset House was established in 1732, enlarged in 1822 and demolished in the early 1980s. The northern part of Somerset townland now comprises a retail park and suburban housing. The southern part comprises Somerset Riverside Park. The area is within the council area of Causeway Coast and Glens.
