Soho, Staffordshire

Soho is an urban area that lies in the east of Smethwick and the west of Handsworth in Staffordshire. Formerly a rural area, it became a major site in the Industrial Revolution. Matthew Boulton established the Soho Manufactory, pioneering mass production on the assembly line principle, in 1766. Boulton's mansion, Soho House, is a now museum. Boulton and James Watt founded Soho Foundry in Smethwick in 1796 to manufacture steam engines. Soho continued to develop with housing and factories during the 19th and 20th centuries. The area is within the council areas of Birmingham and Sandwell.
