Sodbury, Chipping, Gloucestershire

Chipping Sodbury is a market town in Gloucestershire. Chipping Sodbury was built in the 12th century by landowner William Crassus as a 'new town', based on a grid pattern. The town became known for its leather and weaving trades. Mop Fairs are held around Lady Day and Michelmas each year. St John the Baptist Church dates from 1284. The Town Hall, orginally built as a Guild Hall in 1452, has seen renovations in 1738 and 1858. The town has many historic buildings including Rounceval House (c.1670), The Grapes (16th century coaching inn) and The Squire (17th century coaching inn). The town is within the council area of South Gloucestershire.
