Smethwick, Staffordshire
Smethwick is a town in Staffordshire, in the Black Country. Recorded in Domesday as 'Smedeuuich', Smethwick remained a small hamlet until the start of the 19th century but grew rapidly to become a large industrial town in that century. For local government purposes, Smethwick was the basis of Smethwick urban district (1895-1899), municipal borough (1899-1907) and county borough (1907-1966). Smethwick Old Church (1732) is the town's oldest surviving building. Smethwick Council House (1907) was designed by Smethwick-based architect Frederick J. Gill in the Baroque style. The town is within the council area of Sandwell.
