Skipton, Yorkshire
Skipton is a market town in Yorkshire, in the West Riding. It stands north of the River Aire in the Craven area of Yorkshire. The Leeds and Liverpool Canal passes through the town. Skipton Castle is a mediæval castle originally built in 1090 by Robert de Romille which has been maintained and inhabited to the present day. The town is known as the "Gateway to the Dales", due to its close proximity to the Yorkshire Dales. The Skipton Gala is held every June. The town is within the council area of North Yorkshire.
