Skegness, Lincolnshire

Skegness is a seaside town in Lincolnshire, in the Parts of Lindsey. The arrival of the railways in 1873 saw Skegness grow from a small village to a major resort town. The town is popularly known as Skeg, Skeggy, Costa del Skeg or Skegvegas and has a famous mascot, the Jolly Fisherman (designed by John Hassall in 1908 for the Great Northern Railway). The Clock Tower was built in 1898-9 through public subscription. The 1,843 foot long pier was opened on Whit Monday 1881. The town is within the council area of East Lindsey (Lincolnshire).
