Sizergh Castle, Westmorland
Sizergh Castle is a 14th-century mediæval castle in Westmorland. It has been the home of the Strickland family for more than 750 years. Its set in large, beautifully landscaped gardens and based on an impressive 14th century solar tower. The castle contains some of the finest Elizabethan carved overmantels in the country, as well as a collection of good English and French furniture and family portraits. There is a lake, a kitchen garden and a large rock garden constructed in the 1920s. Sizergh houses part of the National Collection of Ferns, which are to be seen in the rock garden, the stumpery and the orchard. The estate covers 1,600 acres. It is within the council area of Westmorland and Furness.
