Sion Mills, Tyrone

Sion Mills is an industrial village, lying on the west bank of the River Mourne in County Tyrone. It is within the townlands of Liggartown and Ballyfatten, in the civil parish of Urney. Sion Mills was laid out as a model linen village by the Herdman brothers when opening their flax spinning mill in 1835. Much of Sion Mills was designed later, in the 1880s and 1890s, by James Herdman's son-in-law, the English architect William Frederick Unsworth. Unsworth designed the Church of the Good Shepherd (1909) in an Italian neo-Romanesque style. The mill finally closed in 2004. The village is within the council area of Derry City and Strabane.
