Shrigley, Down

Shrigley is a small village in County Down. It is within the townland of Tullyveery, in the civil parish of Killyleagh. The village grew up around the large cotton mill built here in 1824 by John Martin. Martin built a model village of bluestone houses around his mill. Martin eventually named the mill and village 'Shrigley' after Pott Shrigley in Cheshire, from where his father originated. The Shrigley Monument (1871), designed by Timothy Hevey, was erected outside the mill gates by local people to commemorate the contribution John Martin had made to their prosperity. From 1968 almost the whole village was redeveloped with only the Shrigley Memorial and a solitary chimney from the former mill remaining from the earlier eras. The village is within the council area of Newry, Mourne and Down.
