Shrewsbury Castle, Shropshire
Shrewsbury Castle is a red sandstone Norman castle in Shrewsbury, Shropshire. The castle stands on a hill in the neck of the meander of the River Severn on which the town developed. A castle was ordered on the site by William I c. 1067 but was later extended by Roger de Montgomery as a base for operations into Wales. Following the Civil War, the castle became a private residence and has been owned by the local authority since 1924. It is now a museum. It is within the council area of Shropshire.
