Short Strand, Down

Short Strand is an urban area, lying on the east bank of the River Lagan in east Belfast, County Down. It is within the townland of Ballymacarret, in the civil parish of Knockbreda. The area has been a Catholic and nationalist enclave in the largely Protestant and loyalist east Belfast since its development for housing in the late 19th century. St Matthew's Church (RC) dates from 1872 but the first chapel was built on the site in 1830. The area around the church was the site of the gun battle known as the Battle of St Matthew's between the Provisional IRA and Ulster loyalists on 27/28 June 1970. The area is within the council area of Belfast.
