Shooters Hill, Kent

Shooters Hill (or Shooter's Hill) is a suburban village in Kent. The hill itself was first recorded in 1226. The hamlet developed alongside the Roman road Watling Street, which crosses the hill on its route from Dover to London. The gothic folly Severndroog Castle dates from 1784. The hamlet grew to a village from the mid 19th century. The Royal Herbert Hospital (1865-1977) is now a residential development known as Royal Herbert Pavilions. The Memorial Hospital opened in 1925. The 1930s saw suburban development but much of the hill remains open land. Although contiguous with Woolwich to its north, Shooter's Hill retains a distinct identity. The village is within the council area of Greenwich.
