Sholing, Hampshire
Sholing is a former manor and village that is now an urban area in the east of Southampton, Hampshire. The earliest reference to the name was in 1251 when Henry III granted the manor to the abbott of Netley Abbey. The hamlet of Botany Bay dates from around the 1790s. The village of Shotley developed after the opening of nearby Netley Hospital in 1863 with the need for housing for staff. The area was incorpotated into the municipal boundaries of Southampton in 1920. It is within the council area of Southampton.
