Shirley, Surrey

Shirley is a suburban village in Surrey. Until the 19th century Shirley remained a small hamlet with Shirley House being built in 1721. St John's Church was built in 1856 as the village began to grow. There was large-scale suburban development in the inter-war period. The modern village is centred on Wickham Road and has several sub-areas including Shirley Oaks, Upper Shirley, Monks Orchard and Spring Park. The former Shirley House estate is now the site of the Trinity School of John Whitgift and a golf course. The village is within the council area of Croydon.
