Shirley, Hampshire

Shirley is a large suburban area in Southampton, Hampshire. The area was formerly a manor of the vill of Millbrook. The village now known as Old Shirly dates from Saxon times. Large-scale suburban development commenced to the south and east of the village following the enclosure of Shirley Common in the 1830s. The Shirley area became part of the municipal area of Southampton in 1895. It is within the council area of Southampton.
