Shirehampton is a suburban village in Gloucestershire. It grew up on the Gloucestershire side of the lowest safe crossing of the River Avon, the ferry to Pill in Somerset operating until 1974. It became part of the municipal area of Bristol in 1904, after which it saw considerable housing development. Although often now considered an outer western suburb of Bristol, it remains separated from the urban area Bristol by Shirehampton Park. The Old Powder House was built in 1775-6 to store gunpowder, which was not allowed into Bristol docks. The village is within the council area of Bristol.
