Shire Ditch, Herefordshire / Worcestershire

Shire Ditch (aka Red Earl's Dyke) is an ancient boundary dyke which forms the Herefordshire - Worcestershire border for much of its length. The dyke runs from north of the Worcestershire Beacon southwards to Ragged Stone Hill. It forms the county border for most of its length from Upper Wych to Ragged Stone Hill. Whilst the earthwork has traditionally been thought to have been created around 1287 by Gilbert de Clare, more recent archaeological work has revealed that some lengths of the dyke were originally built in the Bronze Age. The county border is much older than Gilbert de Clare's time, suggesting that de Clare may in fact have modified an ancient earthwork. It is within the council areas of County of Herefordshire and Malvern Hills (Worcestershire).
