Shipley Moat, Durham
Shipley Moat is a U-shaped hollow about three miles west of Crook in County Durham. The earth-and-stone double-banked enclosure is situated on a hillslope. Its origins and purpose are unknown. It is postulated that the remains are from a moated 12th-century manor house or a fortification constructed by the Brigantes as a stronghold against the Roman invaders. The curiosity of TV's 'Time Team' crew visited and came to no firm conclusions. It is within the council area of County Durham.
