Sheffield, Yorkshire
Sheffield is a city in Yorkshire, in the West Riding. Its name derives from the River Sheaf, which runs through the city. After the Norman conquest, Sheffield Castle was built and the town developed around it. It later became a market town and by the 1600s was a major centre of cutlery manufacture. During the Industrial Revolution when the city saw a huge expansion of its traditional cutlery trade, when stainless steel and crucible steel were developed locally. Some of the city's southern suburbs are in Derbyshire. The city is within the council area of Sheffield.
