Shaw, Lancashire

Shaw is a town in Lancashire. Shaw was originally a hamlet in the township of Crompton. Industrial development in the 19th century saw Shaw become the largest settlement in the township. Urban development to the north around Crompton Fold was known as "Crompton". The coalescing of these urban areas led to the joint name "Shaw and Crompton" being used. Though this joint name is now used for the civil parish, the town is more often now known just as "Shaw". The town is within the council area of Oldham.
