Sharow Cross, Yorkshire

Sharow Cross is the base and stump of a mediæval sanctuary cross near Sharow, Yorkshire, in the West Riding. It is believed to date from the 13th century. The base stands on a stone foundation which is set into the ground. This is the only surviving remnant of 8 crosses marking the limits of the area of sanctuary within one mile of the monastery founded by St Wilfred in 672. Sharow Cross was donated to the National Trust in 1900, making it the earliest NT property in Yorkshire, by William and Charles Garnett who lived at Lucas House in Sharow. It is within the council area of North Yorkshire.
