Shadwell, Middlesex
Shadwell is a metropolitan district and ancient parish in the south-east of Middlesex. Part of the East End of London, it lies on the River Thames between Wapping and Limehouse. Formerly a riverside marsh, Shadwell developed as a settlement from the 16th century. The first church of St Paul's was built in 1656, the area becoming a parish (separate from Stepney) in 1669. The church was rebuilt in 1820 as a 'waterloo church'. Shadwell Basin, an expansion of the London Docks, opened in 1832. The area around the basin saw residential redevelopment after the docks closed in 1969. The Prospect of Whitby public house claims to date from around 1520. The area is within the council area of Tower Hamlets.
