Shacklewell, Middlesex

Shacklewell is a former hamlet that is now an urban area in the west of the metropolitan district of Hackney, Middlesex. The earliest record to the hamlet is from 1490. The hamlet developed on Shacklewell Lane to the east of Ermine Street. Shacklewell remained an isolated settlement until Hackney expanded outward to meet it in the mid 19th century. The village green (Shacklewell Green) has survived. Shacklewell Washing Baths, now a nursery, served the community from the 1930s-1960s. The Church of St Barnabas (1911), a stunning example of early Modernism with high ceilings based on Byzantine architecture, was the work by which its architect, Sir Charles Reilly, wished to be remembered. The area is within the council area of Hackney.
