Selly Oak, Worcestershire
Selly Oak is a former village that is now a suburban area in Worcestershire, forming a southern suburb of Birmingham. It is listed in Domesday as 'Escelie'. The name Selly Oak is recorded in 1746, the oak in question standing at the southern end of the High Street until 1909. The opening of the Worcester and Birmingham Canal in the 1790s saw industry develop in Selly Oak. By the beginning of the 20th century Selly Oak had become an important road, canal and rail intersection and increasingly industrialised. It became part of Birmingham municipal area in 1911. St Mary's Church dates from 1862. It is within the council area of Birmingham.
