Seaton, Devon

Seaton is a town on the south coast of Devon. The town was founded as 'Fleet' or 'Fluta' by a Saxon charter in 1005 AD. It is first referred to as Seaton in a Papal Bull issued in 1146. The town's location at the mouth of the River Ave made it an important port and centre for shipbuilding in the mediæval period. Heavy storms in the 14th century led to much of the estuary silting up. The arrival of the railway in 1868 transformed Seaton into a fashionable holiday destination, many of the town's buildings dating from this period. St Gregory’s Church (C of E) dates back to the 14th century. Seaton Town Hall (1904) is in the Italianate style. Seaton Tramway now runs alongside the Axe estuary between Seaton and Colyford. The town is within the council area of East Devon (Devon).
