Scone Palace, Perthshire
Scone Palace is an early 19th-century Gothic Revival style mansion, incorporating parts of the 16th-century palace, near Scone, Perthshire. Scone was originally the site of an early Christian church, and later an Augustinian priory. Scone Abbey, in the grounds of the Palace, for centuries held the Stone of Scone upon which the early Kings of Scotland were crowned. The abbey's estates were granted to Lord Ruthlen in 1580. The Ruthvens rebuilt the Abbot's Palace of the old abbey as a grand residence. The modern palace was designed by William Atkinson for the 3rd Earl of Mansfield and built in red sandstone with a castellated roof. It was completed in 1807. On view in the State Rooms are collections of furniture, ceramics, ivories, and clocks. The palace is within the council area of Perth and Kinross.
