Saul, Down

Saul is a small village in County Down. It is within the townland of Ballysugagh, in the civil parish of Saul. According to tradition, the Saul Monastery was founded by St Patrick shortly after his arrival in Ireland in AD 432. It is also the traditional site of his death in AD 465. The abbey was destroyed by Viking raids around 1020, refounded as an Augustinian priory around 1130, and dissolved in 1542. One wall of the Augustinian abbey remains. St Patrick's Memorial Church (C of I) and round tower were built in 1933. Saul remains a small village, despite some later 20th century housing developments. The village is within the council area of Newry, Mourne and Down.
