Sandy Row, Antrim

Sandy Row is a former village that is now an urban area to the south-west of the city centre in Belfast, County Antrim. It is within the townland of Malone Lower, in the civil parish of Shankill. By the late 18th-century, it was a small village, then known as 'Carr's Row', on the River Blackstaff on the outskirts of the town of Belfast. It grew in population in the 19th century due to the expansion of the linen industry. It is a traditionally Protestant, close-knit loyalist community, noted for its elaborate Orange Order parades. Sandy Row is within the council area of Belfast.
