Sandown Castle, Kent
Sandown Castle is the remains of an artillery fort constructed by Henry VIII near Deal, Kent. It formed part of the King's Device programme to protect against invasion from France and the Holy Roman Empire, and defended the strategically important Downs anchorage off the English coast. It remained in military use until 1863, after which it was largely demolished and some of it incorporated into the sea wall. A rockery has been built upon the western part of the castle. The surviving remains include a segment of the central keep and the south-west and north-west bastions. The monument is within the council area of Dover (Kent).
